The push in Democrat-led states to up the minimum wage to extraordinary levels has been going on for years. For some reason, they have this belief that making the minimum wage much higher will somehow create a wave of affordability for people. In typical Democrat fashion as well, they fail to think out any of the logic and therefore, fail to see how bad of an idea it is economically.

Surging the minimum wage does nothing but crate hardships for businesses and consumers alike, but Democrats do not really care about that. They continue throwing money at problems that need actual solutions. Much has been the same in Los Angeles, which was originally planned an "Olympic Wage," intended to increase wages to $30 an hour by 2028. That, in theory, was meant to be a boon to the hospitality industry. Instead, it has been a dud.

Officials in LA have now delayed implementation of that controversial plan after the hospitality industry rightfully warned of resulting layoffs and economic fallout. Rebekah Paxton with the Employment Policies Institute says officials are finally beginning to realize that the idea at its core is just destined to fail.

"Workers were getting laid off, hotels were not even able to contribute in some cases to the Olympics room blocks or the renovations they planned for the event," she says.

But it is not just the sheer cost that is the issue. There is a domino effect that comes into play when hiking up the minimum wage without any competence.

The talk of automation comes into play when you hike up wages. Because frankly put, businesses are in business to make money, not lose it. They do not want to overpay someone for a low-skill position, when they can just automate it and pay far less.

"Because it is cheaper to invest in technology than hire folks at the higher wage rate," says Paxton. "They might also layoff staff, shutdown, they might even raise prices for consumers, which is the opposite of why they wanted this in the first place."

From there, it creates a vicious cycle of unaffordability, with no real way to climb out of the hole.

"If they are having to scale back jobs, there are fewer job opportunities, that does not boost affordability for those folks who either lose their jobs or now have to pay higher prices," Paxton says.

The city of LA has delayed this implementation until at least 2030, but if they have any sense, this will never come to fruition at all. The city is already in economic shambles and ruin. Companies are leaving the state and city left and right. This would only give more incentive to get off the sinking ship of California before it is too late.
