Ellen Pompeo Teases 'Really Really Special' Episode Of 'Grey's Anatomy'

Following Derek Sheperd's shocking return to Grey's Anatomy during the season 17 premiere, another major character is expected to return during the episode airing on Thursday (December 3). Both showrunner Krista Vernoff and star Ellen Pompeo have promised the return will be worth the wait to find out who it will be.

While chatting with Deadline, Vernoff was asked if Meredith Grey's mother Ellis would be the next person to pop up on that beach. Ellis, play by Kate Burton, was actually named in the premiere script to keep Patrick Dempsey's appearance a total secret. "I don't know. I don't know. You have to tune in and see who comes to the beach," Vernoff teased. "It'll be a joyful discovery."

On Thursday morning, Pompeo also began teasing the big return. She promised "it's going to be a really really special episode," which only left fans more curious than ever.

The show's official Twitter account joined the conversation, as well, asking fans for "last guesses" about who could possibly be making an appearance. It seems many fans are eager for Meredith's sister, Lexie Grey, to be the next person to show up on the beach. On Thursday, "Lexie" was trending on Twitter.

Eagle eyed fans also spotted some changes on the show's IMDB page. Apparently, a number of the show's former cast members are now listed as making appearances in 2020. Dempsey, of course, is listed as appearing in 2020, however, Burton, T.R. Knight, Jeffrey Dean MorganSandra Oh, Sara Ramirez, Jessica Capshaw, Jerrika Hinton, Loretta Devine and even Katherine Heigl have all been credited with appearances on Grey's Anatomy in 2020.
