Jennifer Aniston And Jimmy Kimmel Just Put Out An Actual Fire At The Emmys

And just like that, it’s awards season!

On Sunday (September 20), the Emmy Awards pulled off an incredible feat: going completely virtual due to the ongoing pandemic. Well, there were a few exceptions to the virtual-only broadcast. Jennifer Aniston joined host Jimmy Kimmel at the Los Angeles' Microsoft Theatre to present the first award of the night—Lead Actress in a Comedy Series, which went to Catherine O'Hara for Schitt's Creek.

In an attempt to "burn all the germs" off the winners envelope before opening it, Aniston and Kimmel lit a fire in a trash can as a bit. Things took a turn when the fire kept relighting even after they bust out the fire extinguisher. Luckily, though, Aniston caught it quickly and put it out again before it got too bad.

Ahead of the broadcast, Kimmel told the Hollywood Reporter he was bracing himself for things to go awry this year. With over 100 camera kits sent out to nominees all over the world, the likelihood of technical difficulties is much higher than usual this year. "It would be a disaster if we can’t get the nominees and winners on the air. That will be a disaster, but it could also be a beautiful disaster," Kimmel said.

He probably wasn't prepared for the first mishap of the night to happen IRL at the Microsoft Theatre with one of the evening's nominees by his side. According to Kimmel, though, he "specializes" in beautiful disasters, so, he's prepared for anything.
